My policy is to earn between 800 and 1000 avios a month. This is not a huge sum but it has the effect of keeping my account live so I do not lose them.
Tesco is a cost effective way of collecting avios because it is possible to collect the points on reasonably priced food. Tesco is not as cheap as ALDI for the main shop but the £3 meal deals are a filling alternative to the local cafe when working. unfortunately the collection rate is not great and the amount of money one can spend at the rate of £3 a day is also small.
I am supplementing this by buying luxury items at a higher conversion rate. Unfortunately this is harder to justify to myself. It is good to spend money on oneself from time to time.
