The death pledge you did not know you made.


The word 'mortgage' translates as 'death pledge' which answers the question. This pretty much answers the question. 

Once we have paid our mortgage we may borrow it back again.

Two luxury food shops. We can afford them without a mortgage.

In the current low interest environment the main benefit to paying off a mortgage is emotional.

In addition to this it is easy and cheap to borrow back whatever has been overpaid. This means that one may have access to cash without tying valuable capital up in unprofitable savings accounts.
